Willpower is a finite resource from "summary" of The Willpower Instinct by Kelly McGonigal

Willpower is like a muscle that can become fatigued with use. Just as your biceps can only curl so many weights before they give out, your self-control can only resist so many temptations before it succumbs. This depletion of willpower is known as ego depletion. Research has shown that when people exert self-control in one area of their lives, such as resisting the urge to eat a tempting treat, they have less willpower to resist other temptations, such as skipping a workout or losing their temper. This is because all acts of self-control draw from the same limited well of mental energy. When your willpower is drained, you are more likely to give in to impulsive urges and make poor decisions. You may find yourself reaching for that second cookie, skipping your evening jog, or snapping at your loved ones. In this state of ego depletion, your brain is less able to regulate emotions, suppress inappropriate responses, and make thoughtful choices. The key to managing your willpower is to be mindful of when your self-control is running low and take steps to replenish it. This can be as simple as taking a short break, going for a walk, or engaging in a relaxing activity. By giving your brain a chance to rest and recharge, you can boost your willpower and make better decisions. So, remember that willpower is a finite resource that needs to be conserved and replenished regularly.
