In our research, we have found that one of the key factors influencing student outcomes is the level of expectations that teachers have for their students. When teachers hold high expectations for their students, they tend to challenge them to reach their full potential. This means that teachers push their students to work harder, think deeper, and strive for excellence in their academic pursuits. High expectations also affect how teachers interact with their students. When teachers expect a lot from their students, they tend to provide more support, encouragement, and feedback. They believe that their students are capable of achieving great things, and they show this belief through their actions and words. This positive reinforcement can inspire students to believe in themselves and work harder to meet their teachers' expectations. Furthermore, high expectations can create a culture of excellence in the classroom. When students know that their teachers expect a lot from them, they are more likely to push themselves to excel. They are motivated to put in the effort needed to succeed, and they are less likely to give up when faced with challenges. This can lead to better student outcomes in terms of academic achievement, motivation, and overall success in school. In contrast, when teachers have low expectations for their students, the opposite tends to occur. Students may not feel challenged to reach their full potential, and they may not receive the support and encouragement they need to succeed. This can lead to lower academic achievement, decreased motivation, and a lack of confidence in their abilities.
