Finding joy in the present moment rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future is a key to happiness from "summary" of The Stoic Art of Living by Tom Morris,Thomas V. Morris

In our daily lives, we often find ourselves consumed by thoughts of what has already happened or what might happen in the future. We dwell on past mistakes or missed opportunities, causing regret and disappointment to overshadow our present moments. At the same time, we worry incessantly about what the future holds, fearing the unknown and feeling anxious about what is yet to come. This constant cycle of looking back and looking forward prevents us from fully experiencing and appreciating the present moment. The Stoic philosophy teaches us to shift our focus away from the past and future, and instead, find joy in the present moment. By living in the here and now, we can free ourselves from the burden of regret and anxiety, allowing ourselves to fully engage with our surroundings and experiences. This shift in perspective enables us to embrace the beauty and richness of each moment, finding happiness and contentment in the simple pleasures of life. When we let go of the past and release our worries about the future, we create space for mindfulness and gratitude in our lives. We become more attuned to the present moment, savoring the sights, sounds, and sensations that surround us. This heightened awareness allows us to appreciate the small moments of joy and beauty that we may have overlooked before, bringing a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction to our lives. By cultivating a practice of living in the present moment, we can learn to let go of the things that hold us back and focus on what truly matters. We can find happiness not in what has been or what might be, but in the here and now. This shift in mindset empowers us to create a life filled with positivity, gratitude, and joy, leading to a more fulfilling and meaningful existence.
