Our selfesteem is tied to how we are perceived by society from "summary" of The Social Animal by Elliot Aronson

In Western cultures, individuals often gauge their worth based on how they are viewed by society. This phenomenon can be traced back to our evolutionary past, where our survival depended on being accepted and valued by the group. As a result, our self-esteem is closely tied to the approval and validation we receive from others. This external validation serves as a barometer for our self-worth, shaping our beliefs and behaviors. The concept of social comparison plays a significant role in shaping our self-esteem. We constantly compare ourselves to others, seeking affirmation and validation from our peers. This comparison can be both explicit and implicit, as we measure our success, attractiveness, and intelligence against societal standards. When we perceive ourselves as falling short of these standards, our self-esteem takes a hit, leading to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. Social norms also play a crucial role in influencing our self-esteem. We internalize societal expectations and strive to meet these standards to gain acceptance and approval. When we deviate from these norms, we risk facing rejection and criticism, which can have a detrimental impact on our self-esteem. As a result, we conform to societal expectations to maintain a positive self-image and avoid social ostracism. Furthermore, the feedback we receive from others has a profound effect on our self-esteem. Positive feedback reinforces our beliefs in our abilities and worth, boosting our self-esteem. In contrast, negative feedback can be damaging, causing us to doubt ourselves and our capabilities. This cycle of feedback shapes our self-perception and influences how we interact with the world around us.
  1. Our self-esteem is intricately linked to how we are perceived by society. The validation, comparison, and feedback we receive from others shape our beliefs, behaviors, and self-worth. By understanding the power of societal influence on our self-esteem, we can strive to cultivate a positive self-image based on our values and aspirations, rather than external validation.
