Napping can impact nighttime sleep from "summary" of The Sleep Solution by W. Chris Winter,M.D.

Napping can indeed have a significant impact on nighttime sleep. While a well-timed nap can be refreshing and rejuvenating, it can also disrupt the delicate balance of our body's internal clock. When we take a nap during the day, we are essentially borrowing sleep from our nighttime allotment. This can lead to difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep later on. Our bodies have a natural rhythm, known as the circadian rhythm, that regulates our sleep-wake cycle. Disrupting this rhythm with naps can confuse our brains and make it harder to get the rest we need at night. Additionally, the length and timing of a nap can play a crucial role in its impact on nighttime sleep. Short naps of 20-30 minutes can be beneficial for boosting alertness and productivity without interfering with nighttime rest. However, longer naps, especially those taken late in the day, can make it harder to fall asleep at night. It's also important to consider the quality of sleep during a nap. If you're not getting restorative sleep during your nap, you may not feel as well-rested and alert as you would like. This can lead to a vicious cycle of daytime drowsiness and nighttime sleep disturbances.
  1. The key is to strike a balance between daytime napping and nighttime sleep. If you find that napping is interfering with your ability to sleep well at night, consider adjusting the timing, duration, and quality of your naps. By being mindful of your napping habits, you can optimize your sleep and wake up feeling refreshed and energized each day.
