Model selfregulation and emotional control from "summary" of The Self-Driven Child by William Stixrud, PhD,Ned Johnson

To truly help our children develop self-regulation and emotional control, we must first be able to model these behaviors ourselves. As parents, we are our children's most important role models, and they will often look to us to learn how to navigate the ups and downs of life. When we are able to regulate our own emotions and demonstrate self-control in challenging situations, we are providing a powerful example for our children to follow. This means not reacting impulsively or explosively when faced with stress or frustration, but instead taking a step back, calming ourselves down, and responding thoughtfully and calmly. By showing our children how to manage their emotions effectively, we can help them learn the skills they need to regulate their own feelings in a healthy way. This involves teaching them how to recognize and label their emotions, understand what triggers them, and develop strategies for coping with difficult situations. When we model self-regulation and emotional control, we are not only setting a positive example for our children, but we are also creating a nurturing and supportive environment in which they can learn and grow. This means being patient and understanding when they make mistakes, offering guidance and encouragement, and helping them develop the resilience they need to face life's challenges with confidence and composure.
  1. By embodying these qualities ourselves, we can empower our children to become self-driven individuals who are able to regulate their emotions, make good decisions, and thrive in an increasingly complex and demanding world.
