Willpower is not enough to overcome bad habits from "summary" of The Power of Habit: by Charles Duhigg | Summary & Analysis by Elite Summaries

When it comes to breaking bad habits, many people believe that all it takes is willpower. They think that if they just muster up enough self-control, they will be able to resist temptation and make better choices. However, the reality is that willpower alone is not enough to overcome bad habits. This is because habits are deeply ingrained in our brains, and they operate on a subconscious level. Habits have a three-part structure: cue, routine, and reward. The cue triggers the habit, the routine is the behavior itself, and the reward is the positive reinforcement that encourages the behavior to repeat in the future. Willpower only addresses the routine part of the habit loop. It helps us resist the urge to engage in the behavior temporarily, but it does not address the underlying reasons why we engage in the habit in the first place. To truly break a bad habit, we need to identify the cue and the reward associated with it. By understanding what triggers the habit and what we get out of it, we can begin to change our behavior. This involves replacing the routine with a healthier alternative that still provides the same reward. For example, if you have a habit of snacking on junk food when you feel stressed (cue), you could replace that behavior with going for a walk (new routine) and still get the stress relief you seek (reward). Changing habits requires self-awareness, introspection, and commitment. It is not easy, and it takes time and effort. However, by focusing on the entire habit loop and not just the routine, we can increase our chances of success. Willpower may help us in the short term, but to truly overcome bad habits, we need to dig deeper and understand the underlying mechanisms at play.
