This is because dopamine strengthens the neural pathways associated with the habit, making it easier for us to perform the routine in the future. Eventually, the habit becomes so deeply ingrained that it feels almost effortless to carry out. Understanding the role of dopamine in habit formation can help us change our habits for the better. By identifying the cues and rewards that drive our habits, we can start to rewire our brains and replace negative behaviors with positive ones. For example, if we want to break a habit of snacking on junk food in the afternoon, we can identify the cue (such as feeling stressed) and the reward (such as a temporary boost in mood) that drive this behavior.
