Dopamine plays a key role in habit formation from "summary" of The Power of Habit: by Charles Duhigg | Summary & Analysis by Elite Summaries

Dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain, is closely linked to habit formation. When we engage in a behavior that leads to a reward, such as eating chocolate or receiving praise, our brain releases dopamine. This feel-good chemical reinforces the behavior and encourages us to repeat it in the future. Over time, the brain starts to associate the cue that triggers the behavior with the reward, creating a habit loop. The habit loop consists of three components: the cue, the routine, and the reward. The cue is a trigger that tells your brain to go into automatic mode and which habit to use. The routine is the behavior itself, which can be physical, mental, or emotional. The reward is the positive reinforcement that makes the habit worth remembering and repeating. Dopamine plays a crucial role in this loop by making us crave the reward and seek out the behavior that leads to it. As we repeat the habit loop over and over again, the behavior becomes more automatic and ingrained in our brain. This is because dopamine strengthens the neural pathways associated with the habit, making it easier for us to perform the routine in the future. Eventually, the habit becomes so deeply ingrained that it feels almost effortless to carry out. Understanding the role of dopamine in habit formation can help us change our habits for the better. By identifying the cues and rewards that drive our habits, we can start to rewire our brains and replace negative behaviors with positive ones. For example, if we want to break a habit of snacking on junk food in the afternoon, we can identify the cue (such as feeling stressed) and the reward (such as a temporary boost in mood) that drive this behavior. By finding healthier ways to cope with stress and boost our mood, we can gradually replace the old habit with a new, more positive one.
