A variety of choices can create anxiety and stress from "summary" of The Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz

When we are faced with a multitude of choices, we often believe that having more options will lead to greater satisfaction. However, research shows that this is not always the case. In fact, having too many choices can actually lead to anxiety and stress rather than happiness and contentment. One reason for this is that with so many options available, we may find it difficult to make a decision. We may worry that we will make the wrong choice and miss out on something better. This fear of making the wrong decision can paralyze us and prevent us from taking action. As a result, we may end up feeling overwhelmed and stressed out by the decision-making process. Furthermore, having a wide array of choices can also lead to a sense of dissatisfaction. When we have so many options to choose from, we may constantly second-guess our decisions and wonder if we could have made a better choice. This constant comparison can make us feel like we are missing out on something better, leading to feelings of regret and dissatisfaction. In addition, the sheer number of choices available to us can lead to a phenomenon known as "decision fatigue." When we are faced with too many decisions to make, our mental energy becomes depleted, making it harder for us to make good choices. This can lead to feelings of stress and anxiety as we struggle to navigate through all the options available to us.
  1. While having a variety of choices can be empowering, it can also be overwhelming. Too many options can lead to anxiety, stress, and dissatisfaction, making it more difficult for us to make decisions and ultimately reducing our overall well-being.
