Let go of attachments and desires, find contentment in the present moment from "summary" of The Miracle of Mindfulness by Thich Nhat Hanh

When we are constantly seeking for something outside of ourselves to bring us happiness and fulfillment, we are setting ourselves up for disappointment. We become attached to material possessions, relationships, and achievements, believing that they will bring us lasting joy. But the truth is, these external factors are impermanent and subject to change. Instead of constantly chasing after things that we believe will make us happy, we can learn to let go of our attachments and desires. This does not mean that we should abandon our goals and aspirations, but rather that we should not be dependent on them for our sense of well-being. By letting go of our attachments, we free ourselves from the burden of always wanting more and never feeling satisfied. Finding contentment in the present moment is about learning to appreciate what we have right now, rather than always looking to the future for happiness. When we are fully present in the moment, we can see the beauty and wonder that surrounds us. We can savor the simple pleasures of life, such as a warm cup of tea or a gentle breeze on our skin. When we are content in the present moment, we are not consumed by regret about the past or anxiety about the future. We are able to fully experience each moment as it unfolds, without being distracted by our worries and concerns. This allows us to live more fully and deeply, appreciating the richness of each experience. Letting go of attachments and desires and finding contentment in the present moment is a practice that requires mindfulness and awareness. It is not always easy, especially in a society that values achievement and success above all else. But by cultivating a sense of inner peace and contentment, we can free ourselves from the cycle of endless craving and find true happiness in the here and now.
