Assumptions lead to misunderstandings and unhappiness from "summary" of The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz,Janet Mills

When we make assumptions, we believe we know what others are thinking, feeling, or intending. We assume we understand their words and actions based on our own interpretations and beliefs. But the truth is, our assumptions are often far from reality. We create a whole story in our minds without any concrete evidence to support it. And this can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts with others. When we assume, we are not in the present moment. We are living in the past, projecting our past experiences onto the present situation. We are letting our fears and insecurities dictate how we perceive the world around us. And this can cloud our judgment and prevent us from seeing things as they truly are. Our assumptions are like a veil that distorts our perception of reality. The problem with assumptions is that they are based on our personal beliefs and conditioning. We assume that our beliefs are the truth, that our perspective is the only valid one. But in reality, everyone has their own unique way of seeing the world. When we assume that our way is the right way, we close ourselves off to other possibilities and perspectives. This can lead to conflicts and misunderstandings with others who have different beliefs and viewpoints. Assumptions also lead to unhappiness. When we make assumptions about others, we are setting ourselves up for disappointment. We expect others to act in a certain way based on our assumptions, and when they don't meet our expectations, we feel hurt and betrayed. Our assumptions create unrealistic expectations that can never be met. And this can lead to resentment, anger, and unhappiness in our relationships with others. To avoid misunderstandings and unhappiness, we must learn to communicate openly and honestly with others. Instead of making assumptions, we should ask questions and seek clarification. We should be willing to listen to others' perspectives and be open to different points of view. By letting go of our assumptions and being open to new possibilities, we can create deeper connections and more meaningful relationships with others.
