The Western diet is dominated by foods lacking in nutrients from "summary" of The Dorito Effect by Mark Schatzker

In the Western world, our diet has strayed far from what our bodies truly need. We no longer prioritize nutrient-dense foods that provide us with essential vitamins and minerals. Instead, our grocery store shelves are filled with highly processed foods that are engineered to be hyper-palatable but lack the nutrients our bodies crave. Walk down the aisles of any supermarket, and you'll be bombarded with a plethora of options that are high in calories but low in actual nutritional value. These foods may taste good in the moment, but they do little to nourish our bodies and keep us healthy in the long run. We have become accustomed to reaching for convenience foods that are quick and easy to prepare, without considering the impact they have on our overall health. The rise of fast food and processed snacks has only exacerbated this issue. Foods like burgers, fries, and sugary drinks may be satisfying in the moment, but they do little to support our health and well-being. We've become hooked on the intense flavors and textures of these foods, without realizing that they are essentially empty calories that do little to fuel our bodies. As a result, many people in the Western world are overfed but undernourished. We consume plenty of calories, but we are lacking in the essential nutrients our bodies need to function properly. This imbalance can lead to a host of health issues, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. It's time for us to rethink our approach to food and prioritize nutrient-dense options that will truly nourish our bodies. By focusing on whole, unprocessed foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients, we can support our health and well-being in a meaningful way. Let's break free from the cycle of empty calories and start nourishing our bodies with the nutrients they truly need.
