Microexpressions reveal true emotions that are often fleeting from "summary" of The Definitive Book of Body Language by Barbara Pease,Allan Pease

Microexpressions are brief, involuntary facial expressions that reveal a person's true emotions. These microexpressions are fleeting, often lasting just a fraction of a second, making them difficult to detect with the naked eye. However, by learning to recognize these microexpressions, one can gain valuable insights into a person's thoughts and feelings. Researchers have identified seven universal emotions that can be expressed through microexpressions: happiness, sadness, surprise, fear, disgust, anger, and contempt. These emotions are hardwired into our brains and are displayed on our faces in a similar way across different cultures and backgrounds. By paying close attention to these microexpressions, one can uncover a person's genuine emotional state, which may differ from the emotions they are trying to portray. Microexpressions are often more reliable indicators of a person's true feelings than verbal or nonverbal cues. This is because microexpressions are controlled by the limbic system, which is responsible for our instinctual emotional responses. As a result, these microexpressions are difficult to fake or suppress, providing an authentic glimpse into a person's inner world.
  1. With practice and training, one can develop the skills to detect these fleeting facial expressions. By honing this ability, one can enhance their emotional intelligence and better understand the true emotions of those around them. In essence, microexpressions serve as windows into the soul, offering a glimpse of what lies beneath the surface of our conscious minds.
