Compassion is often overshadowed by egoism from "summary" of The Culture of Narcissism by Christopher Lasch

In a society where self-absorption and self-interest are encouraged and rewarded, genuine compassion for others tends to take a backseat. The prevailing culture of narcissism fosters an individualistic mindset that prioritizes personal desires and achievements above all else. This egocentric worldview can make it difficult for people to truly empathize with others and act selflessly towards them. Egoism, or excessive self-love, is pervasive in a narcissistic culture as individuals are constantly seeking validation and admiration from others. This self-centered focus can lead people to overlook the needs and suffering of those around them, as their primary concern is their own well-being and success. In such a competitive and materialistic society, compassion is often seen as a weakness rather than a strength. The emphasis on individualism and self-promotion in a narcissistic culture can also hinder the development of genuine relationships and connections with others. People may be more concerned with how they are perceived by others and how they can benefit from social interactions, rather than forming deep and meaningful bonds based on mutual respect and care. Furthermore, the constant pressure to project a perfect image and achieve external validation can erode one's capacity for empathy and compassion. In a culture that values superficial appearances and material possessions, genuine acts of kindness and generosity may be seen as unnecessary or even undesirable.
  1. The culture of narcissism can perpetuate a cycle of self-absorption and indifference towards others, making it difficult for compassion to flourish. As individuals become more focused on their own needs and desires, they may struggle to see beyond themselves and truly connect with the suffering and struggles of those around them.
