Recognize cognitive biases from "summary" of The Critical Thinking Toolkit by Dr. Marlene Caroselli

Cognitive biases are like optical illusions for the mind. They are mental shortcuts—often unconscious—that can lead us to make illogical decisions and judgments. By recognizing these biases, we can begin to overcome them and think more critically. One common cognitive bias is confirmation bias, which is the tendency to seek out information that confirms our existing beliefs. This can prevent us from considering alternative viewpoints and lead to faulty reasoning. By being aware of this bias, we can actively seek out contradictory evidence and challenge our own assumptions. Another prevalent bias is the anchoring bias, where we rely too heavily on the first piece of information we receive when making decisions. This can skew our judgment and prevent us from considering all relevant factors. By recognizing this bias, we can consciously seek out additional information and avoid being influenced by initial impressions. The availability heuristic is yet another cognitive bias that can cloud our judgment. This bias leads us to overestimate the importance of information that is readily available in our minds, such as recent news stories or vivid memories. By acknowledging this bias, we can strive to consider all relevant information and avoid making decisions based on easily accessible but potentially misleading data.
  1. We can become more aware of the limitations of our thinking processes and take steps to mitigate their effects. This awareness allows us to approach problems and decisions with a more critical and rational mindset, ultimately leading to more informed and effective choices.
