It’s so easy to dismiss your mental and emotional health when you’re a mother. There are always a million things to do, a million people to take care of, a million reasons to put yourself last. But the truth is, when you don’t take care of your mental and emotional health, you are not able to show up as your best self for your family. You are not able to be the mother you want to be. Think of it this way: if you were sick with the flu, you wouldn’t hesitate to take a sick day and rest, right? Well, when your mental and emotional health is suffering, it’s like being sick with a different kind of flu. It’s just as important to take care of yourself in those moments. And here’s the thing: there are so many ways to prioritize your mental and emotional health. It could be as simple as taking a few minutes to yourself each day to breathe deeply and center yourself. Or it could be seeking help from a therapist or counselor when you need it. It could even be something as small as putting down your phone and spending quality time with your loved ones. The key is to pay attention to how you’re feeling and to give yourself permission to take care of yourself. It’s not selfish—it’s necessary. When you take care of your mental and emotional health, you are better able to handle the ups and downs of motherhood. You are better able to be present and engaged with your children. And most importantly, you are better able to be kind to yourself. So make yourself a priority. Your family will thank you for it.
