Virtue is the highest good in Stoic philosophy from "summary" of Stoicism and the Art of Happiness by Donald Robertson

According to the Stoics, the highest good in life is virtue. This concept lies at the heart of their philosophy, guiding their thoughts and actions. Virtue, for the Stoics, is not just one good among many; it is the ultimate good, the key to living a fulfilling and meaningful life. To understand why virtue is considered the highest good, we must look at the Stoic understanding of the nature of the human soul. The Stoics believed that we are all born with a spark of divine reason within us, which they called the "logos." This rational principle is what sets humans apart from other animals and allows us to act in accordance with the natural order of the universe. Virtue, then, is the expression of this divine reason in our thoughts and actions. It is the alignment of our will with the universal reason that governs the cosmos. By cultivating virtue, we come into harmony with the natural order of the world and fulfill our true potential as human beings. The Stoics believed that all other goods, such as wealth, pleasure, and health, are ultimately secondary to virtue. While these things may be preferred and pursued to some extent, they are not essential to a truly good life. In fact, the Stoics argued that external goods are ultimately indifferent, as they do not have any intrinsic value in themselves. By focusing on cultivating virtue, rather than chasing after external goods, we can find true happiness and fulfillment. Virtue is the only good that is entirely within our control. No external circumstances can take it away from us, as long as we remain steadfast in our commitment to living a virtuous life.
  1. The Stoic philosophy teaches us that true happiness comes from within, from living in accordance with our rational nature. By making virtue our highest priority, we can overcome the challenges and adversities of life with grace and dignity. Virtue is not just a means to an end; it is an end in itself, the ultimate goal of a life well-lived.
