Practice active listening from "summary" of Seeking Wisdom by Julia Cameron
Active listening is a key skill that can greatly enhance our ability to communicate effectively and build strong relationships with others. It involves not only hearing what someone is saying but also fully engaging with their words, thoughts, and emotions. When we practice active listening, we are fully present in the moment, giving our full attention to the person speaking without being distracted by our own thoughts or external stimuli. To be an active listener, we must focus on the speaker, maintain eye contact, and show genuine interest in what they are saying. This means avoiding the temptation to interrupt or offer our own opinions while the other person is speaking. Instead, we should listen attentively, nodding and making encouraging gestures to show that we are engaged and understanding. Active listening also involves asking open-ended questions to encourage the speaker to elaborate on their thoughts and feelings. By showing a genuine curiosity and interest in the other person's perspective, we can deepen our understanding of their experiences and strengthen our connection with them. Additionally, paraphrasing and reflecting back what we have heard can demonstrate that we are truly listening and seeking to understand the speaker's point of view.- We can improve our communication skills, foster empathy and understanding in our relationships, and build trust with others. It allows us to create a safe and supportive space for open and honest dialogue, where both parties feel valued and respected. Ultimately, active listening is a powerful tool for building meaningful connections and cultivating deeper, more fulfilling relationships with those around us.
