The importance of treating parents with kindness and respect from "summary" of Sahih Muslim (Volume 8) by Imam Abul-Husain Muslim

Treating parents with kindness and respect is a fundamental principle in Islam, emphasized by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and recorded in Sahih Muslim. The importance of this concept is highlighted through various hadiths that stress the significance of maintaining good behavior towards one's parents. This includes showing gratitude, obedience, and love towards them, as well as fulfilling their needs and wishes to the best of one's ability. In one hadith, it is narrated that a man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) seeking advice on whom he should be kind to. The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, "Your mother." The man asked again, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) responded, "Your mother." The man asked a third time, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) again said, "Your mother." Only after the man asked a fourth time did the Prophet (peace be upon him) say, "Your father." This hadith illustrates the high status of mothers in Islam and the importance of showing them kindness and respect. It emphasizes the need to prioritize the well-being of one's mother and to recognize her sacrifices and efforts in raising her children. Similarly, fathers are also deserving of respect and obedience, as they play a crucial role in shaping their children's character and values. Furthermore, treating parents with kindness and respect is not just a duty, but also a means of earning blessings and rewards from Allah. In another hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) stated that the pleasure of Allah lies in the pleasure of one's parents, and His anger lies in their anger. By honoring and cherishing one's parents, a person can attain closeness to Allah and increase their chances of attaining paradise.
  1. The concept of treating parents with kindness and respect is deeply rooted in Islamic teachings and serves as a cornerstone of moral conduct. It is a reflection of one's faith and character, demonstrating humility, gratitude, and compassion towards those who have cared for and nurtured them. In following the guidance of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and upholding the values of Islam, believers can strive to embody the virtues of filial piety and uphold the sanctity of the parent-child relationship.
