Avoiding backbiting and gossip is essential for a Muslim from "summary" of Sahih Muslim (Volume 5) by

The importance of avoiding backbiting and gossip in the life of a Muslim cannot be overstated. Backbiting and gossip are considered major sins in Islam, and they have severe consequences in the eyes of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned his followers about the dangers of engaging in such behavior, and he emphasized the importance of guarding one's tongue. In Sahih Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad is reported to have said, "Do you know what backbiting is?" When the companions replied that they did not, he said, "It is to mention something about your brother that he would dislike." This hadith makes it clear that backbiting is not only harmful to the person being talked about but also displeasing to Allah. Furthermore, the Prophet Muhammad warned that backbiting and gossip can lead to the destruction of communities and the spread of discord among believers. He said, "The thing I fear most for my nation is the deeds of the stomach, the private parts, and the tongue." This hadith emphasizes the importance of controlling one's speech and avoiding harmful talk. In another hadith from Sahih Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad stated, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak a good word or remain silent." This hadith highlights the importance of speaking only that which is beneficial and avoiding idle chatter that can lead to backbiting and gossip.
