Real happiness is found within ourselves, not in external circumstances from "summary" of Real Happiness by Sharon Salzberg

Real happiness is not something we acquire from external circumstances, but rather something we cultivate from within. It is a state of being that is independent of our surroundings, possessions, or achievements. Happiness is not contingent on material wealth, social status, or external validation. It is a quality that arises from within us, based on our attitudes, perspectives, and inner sense of contentment. When we rely on external circumstances for our happiness, we are constantly at the mercy of the ever-changing world around us. We become vulnerable to the fluctuations of life, always seeking validation and fulfillment from outside sources. This external pursuit of happiness is inherently unstable and fleeting, as it is dependent on factors beyond our control. On the other hand, when we turn our attention inward and cultivate a sense of inner peace and contentment, we discover a lasting source of happiness that is not easily swayed by external circumstances. By developing qualities such as gratitude, compassion, and mindfulness, we can tap into a wellspring of joy that is always accessible to us, regardless of the challenges we may face. True happiness is not found in the pursuit of external pleasures or the avoidance of pain, but in the acceptance of life as it is, with all its imperfections and uncertainties. It is about learning to be at peace with ourselves and finding fulfillment in the present moment, rather than constantly chasing after the next fleeting desire. By turning our attention inward and cultivating a sense of self-awareness and inner strength, we can uncover the true source of happiness that lies within us. It is a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance, where we learn to let go of our attachments to external conditions and find true contentment in the here and now. Happiness is not something we find outside of ourselves, but a quality that we awaken from within, through the practice of mindfulness, compassion, and self-reflection.
