Teaching boys resilience helps them cope with challenges in life from "summary" of Raising Boys, Third Edition by Steve Biddulph

Many people worry that boys are not as resilient as they should be. They get anxious, they avoid challenges, they collapse when things go wrong. But the good news is that resilience is not a fixed trait. It is a muscle that can be developed, and boys can learn to be tougher, more determined, and more resourceful. Resilience is a vital quality because life is full of challenges. If boys are not able to bounce back from setbacks, they can become trapped in a cycle of failure. They may give up on their dreams, they may feel overwhelmed by stress, and they may struggle to cope with the demands of adulthood. One of the most important ways to teach resilience is to let boys experience failure. When they face obstacles, they have the opportunity to learn how to overcome them. They can develop problem-solving skills, they can learn to ask for help when they need it, and they can build the confidence that comes from knowing they can handle whatever life throws at them. It is also important to encourage boys to take risks. When they step outside their comfort zone, they can discover their own strength and resourcefulness. They can learn that failure is not the end of the world, that mistakes are a natural part of growth, and that success often comes after multiple attempts. In addition, boys need positive role models who demonstrate resilience. When they see adults facing challenges with determination and grace, they learn that setbacks are not a sign of weakness, but an opportunity for growth. They can be inspired to emulate these role models, to persevere in the face of adversity, and to believe in their own ability to overcome obstacles. By teaching boys resilience, we are giving them the tools they need to navigate the ups and downs of life. We are helping them to build a strong foundation for their future success, to develop the skills and mindset that will serve them well in any situation. And most importantly, we are showing them that they are capable of facing whatever challenges come their way, with courage, with resilience, and with confidence.
