Private governments perpetuate systemic inequalities within organizations from "summary" of Private Government by Elizabeth Anderson
In the workplace, the power dynamics between employers and employees often mirror those of a government ruling over its subjects. The employer possesses authority to make decisions that significantly impact the lives of their employees, from setting wages and work hours to determining job responsibilities and disciplinary measures. This unequal distribution of power creates a system in which the employer wields control over the employee’s life both within and outside the workplace. This form of governance within organizations perpetuates systemic inequalities by reinforcing hierarchies that are based on factors such as race, gender, and social class. Those in positions of power use their authority to maintain their privileged status and limit the opportunities available to those beneath them. This results in a lack of diversity in leadership positions and perpetuates cycles of discrimination and marginalization. Furthermore, the lack of transparency and accountability within private governments allows for unchecked discrimination and exploitation to occur. Employers are able to make decisions behind closed doors that may disproportionately harm certain groups of employees, without facing repercussions for their actions. This lack of oversight enables the perpetuation of systemic inequalities within organizations, as those in power are not held accountable for their discriminatory practices. In order to address these issues, it is essential to recognize the parallels between private governments and public governments, and to apply principles of democracy and equality to the workplace. By fostering a culture of inclusivity, transparency, and accountability, organizations can work towards dismantling systemic inequalities and creating a more equitable environment for all employees.
