Employees lack democratic decisionmaking powers in private governments from "summary" of Private Government by Elizabeth Anderson

The workplace is a site of private government where employees lack democratic decision-making powers. In this private world, managers exercise authority over employees with little to no input from those affected by their decisions. This top-down structure mirrors traditional monarchies or dictatorships rather than democratic societies. Employees are subject to the whims of their bosses, who have the power to hire, fire, promote, and discipline them as they see fit. The lack of democratic decision-making in private governments results in a power imbalance between managers and employees. Managers hold all the cards, while employees are left with little recourse if they disagree with a decision or feel they have been treated unfairly. This imbalance of power can lead to exploitation and abuse, as employees are forced to comply with the demands of their superiors out of fear of losing their job or facing other consequences. Furthermore, the absence of democratic decision-making in private governments stifles innovation and creativity. When employees are not given a voice in the decision-making process, their ideas and perspectives are often overlooked or ignored. This can lead to missed opportunities for growth and improvement within the organization, as valuable insights from those on the front lines are disregarded in favor of top-down directives. In a truly democratic society, power is distributed among all members, with mechanisms in place to ensure that decisions are made in the best interest of the collective. However, in private governments, power is concentrated in the hands of a few, leading to a system that prioritizes the needs and desires of those in charge over the well-being of the workforce as a whole. This lack of democracy in the workplace perpetuates inequality and injustice, creating an environment where some individuals hold all the power while others are left to bear the consequences of their decisions.
