Balance warmth and competence in your presence from "summary" of Presence by Amy Cuddy

When we interact with others, we are constantly communicating our warmth and competence through our nonverbal cues. These signals play a significant role in how others perceive us and ultimately how they respond to us. Warmth encompasses traits such as kindness, empathy, and trustworthiness, while competence refers to qualities like intelligence, expertise, and reliability. Striking the right balance between warmth and competence is crucial for creating a positive impression and fostering effective communication. If we come across as too warm but lacking in competence, we may be perceived as well-meaning but ineffectual. On the other hand, leaning too heavily on competence without displaying warmth can make us seem cold, distant, or even arrogant. In order to convey both warmth and competence, we need to be mindful of our body language, facial expressions, tone of voice, and overall demeanor. Smiling, making eye contact, nodding in agreement, and using open gestures can signal warmth, while speaking confidently, maintaining good posture, and demonstrating knowledge in a subject area can convey competence. It's important to note that different situations may call for different levels of warmth and competence. For example, in a professional setting, it may be more beneficial to emphasize competence to establish credibility and expertise. However, in personal relationships or situations that require collaboration and teamwork, warmth may take precedence in building trust and rapport.
