One common mistake we make is assuming that individuals who exude confidence must necessarily be competent. In reality, confidence and competence are not always correlated. We tend to be drawn to people who are self-assured, mistaking their confidence for actual ability. This phenomenon is known as the "confidence heuristic" - we use confidence as a mental shortcut to judge someone's capabilities. The problem with relying on confidence as a predictor of competence is that confidence can be easily faked or inflated. People can project an air of certainty without actually possessing the skills or knowledge to back it up.
