Stoicism emphasizes the importance of living virtuously from "summary" of Lessons in Stoicism by John Sellars

Stoicism, as a philosophical school, places great emphasis on the idea of living virtuously. This means that a Stoic aims to live a life in accordance with reason and in pursuit of moral excellence. According to Stoic teachings, the ultimate goal of life is to cultivate wisdom and to develop a virtuous character. This involves practicing self-control, courage, justice, and other virtues in one's daily life. Living virtuously, for a Stoic, is not just about following a set of rules or commandments. It is about cultivating a mindset and a way of life that is aligned with the principles of Stoic philosophy. This means learning to see things from a rational and objective perspective, accepting things that are beyond our control, and focusing on what is within our power to change. One of the key ideas in Stoicism is the concept of the "Stoic sage," a person who has achieved perfect wisdom and virtue. While it may be impossible to attain this ideal state, Stoics believe that it is still worth striving towards it. By living virtuously and striving for moral excellence, one can move closer to this ideal and lead a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Living virtuously also means practicing what Stoics refer to as "self-mastery." This involves learning to control one's desires, emotions, and impulses, and to act in accordance with reason rather than being driven by passion or irrationality. By cultivating self-control and discipline, one can avoid being swayed by external circumstances and maintain inner peace and tranquility.
  1. Stoicism teaches that living virtuously is essential for achieving fulfillment and happiness in life. By cultivating wisdom, practicing self-control, and developing a virtuous character, one can lead a life that is in harmony with reason and in pursuit of moral excellence. This way of life, according to Stoic philosophy, leads to a sense of inner peace, contentment, and fulfillment.
