Transactional leadership theory focuses on exchanges between leaders and followers from "summary" of Leadership traits and theories. A Review by Murali Mg

Transactional leadership theory emphasizes the importance of exchanges between leaders and followers. This theory is based on the idea that leaders and followers engage in a transactional relationship, where both parties give and receive something in return. In this type of leadership, the focus is on the exchange of rewards and punishments, rather than on inspiring and motivating followers. Leaders who follow the principles of transactional leadership set clear expectations for their followers and provide rewards for meeting these expectations. Conversely, they also impose consequences for failing to meet these expectations. This approach is often seen as a more traditional form of leadership, where performance is driven by a system of rewards and punishments. One of the key concepts of transactional leadership is contingent reward, where leaders reward followers for meeting specified goals or expectations. This creates a clear framework for performance and helps to ensure that followers understand what is expected of them. Followers are motivated to perform well in order to receive the rewards that have been promised to them. Another important aspect of transactional leadership is management by exception. In this approach, leaders only intervene when followers deviate from established norms or fail to meet expectations. This allows leaders to focus their attention on addressing problems and resolving issues, rather than constantly monitoring and micromanaging their followers.
  1. Transactional leadership theory is centered around the idea of a give-and-take relationship between leaders and followers. By establishing clear expectations, providing rewards for good performance, and addressing deviations from expectations, leaders can effectively manage and motivate their followers towards achieving organizational goals.
