Seeing others as objects creates conflict from "summary" of Leadership and Self-deception by Arbinger Institute

When we see others as objects, we deny their humanity. We treat them as obstacles or tools, rather than as people with their own thoughts, feelings, and needs. This distortion in perception leads to a fundamental conflict, because it creates a misalignment between how we see others and how they actually are. This conflict manifests itself in our interactions with others, as well as in our own internal struggles. Seeing others as objects is a form of self-deception that allows us to justify mistreating them. When we view someone as less than human, it becomes easier to ignore their needs and desires. We become blind to the impact of our actions on them, and we prioritize our own interests above theirs. This selfish mindset inevitably leads to friction and tension in our relationships, as we prioritize our own needs at the expense of others. Furthermore, when we see others as objects, we also distort our own self-perception. We become disconnected from our own humanity, as we deny the part of ourselves that is capable of empathy, compassion, and understanding. This self-deception creates a sense of inner conflict, as we struggle to reconcile our mistreatment of others with our own values and beliefs.
  1. Seeing others as objects creates a destructive cycle of conflict in both our external relationships and our internal struggles. It perpetuates a mindset of selfishness and indifference, which erodes trust, respect, and cooperation. Only by recognizing the humanity in others, and in ourselves, can we break free from this cycle of conflict and cultivate more meaningful and harmonious relationships.
