Gender data bias reinforces patriarchal systems from "summary" of Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez

Gender data bias is a pervasive issue that has far-reaching consequences for women. When data is collected predominantly from men, it creates a distorted view of the world that fails to account for the experiences and needs of women. This bias reinforces patriarchal systems by perpetuating the idea that men are the default human beings, while women are merely a subset. This bias is particularly harmful in fields such as medicine, where women have historically been underrepresented in clinical trials. This lack of representation can have serious implications for women's health, as medications and treatments may not be as effective for them. In extreme cases, women have even died because the drugs they were prescribed were not tested on females. Gender data bias also affects women in the workforce, where data on salaries and promotions often fail to account for the structural barriers that women face. This can result in women being paid less than their male counterparts for the same work, or being passed over for promotions despite being equally qualified. In addition to these tangible consequences, gender data bias also has a more insidious effect on society as a whole. By perpetuating the idea that men are the norm, while women are the exception, it reinforces stereotypes and biases that harm women in countless ways. This not only limits women's opportunities and potential, but also contributes to a culture that devalues their contributions and perspectives. In order to combat this bias, we must first acknowledge its existence and work to actively correct it. This means collecting more data on women, disaggregating data by sex, and ensuring that women are adequately represented in all areas of research and decision-making. Only by challenging the status quo and demanding better, more inclusive data can we hope to create a more equitable society for all.
