Vice President of India from "summary" of Indian Polity and Constitution Book by Mocktime Publication
The Vice-President of India is the second-highest constitutional office in the country after the President. The Vice-President is elected indirectly by an electoral college consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote. The Vice-President holds office for a term of five years from the date on which he enters office. He may resign his office by submitting his resignation to the President. The Vice-President may be removed from office by a resolution of the Rajya Sabha passed by an absolute majority (i. e., a majority of the total membership of the House) and agreed to by the Lok Sabha. The Vice-President acts as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. In this capacity, he is entitled to only one vote in the Rajya Sabha, but this vote can be exercised by him in the case of an equality of votes. The Vice-President acts as President in the event of the resignation, removal, death, or absence of the President. The Vice-President does not perform the duties of the office of the President when the President is unable to perform his duties due to absence, illness or any other cause. The Vice-President is entitled to the same emoluments and allowances as the Chairman of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha).Similar Posts
