Accountability is necessary from "summary" of I'm Still Here by Austin Channing Brown

Accountability is not simply a nice-to-have concept; it is a necessity. It is a vital component of any attempt to dismantle systems of oppression and inequality. Without accountability, we cannot hope to truly create a more just and equitable society. Accountability demands that we take responsibility for our actions, particularly when those actions have harmed others. It requires us to be open to feedback, willing to listen, and committed to change. In the context of racial justice, accountability is especially crucial. White people, in particular, must be willing to hold themselves and each other accountable for the ways in which they perpetuate racism, both consciously and unconsciously. This means acknowledging the ways in which they have benefited from systems of white supremacy, and actively working to dismantle those systems. It means being willing to have uncomfortable conversations and confront difficult truths. Accountability also requires us to recognize that change is an ongoing process. It is not enough to simply acknowledge our privilege or apologize for past mistakes; we must commit to continuous growth and learning. This means being willing to examine our own biases and prejudices, and to challenge them whenever they surface. It means being open to feedback, even when it is difficult to hear. It means being willing to make mistakes, and to learn from them.
  1. Accountability is about building trust. It is about showing up for others in a way that is honest, transparent, and consistent. It is about creating a culture of accountability in which we hold each other to high standards, but also offer grace and forgiveness when needed. It is about recognizing that we are all imperfect beings, but that we have the power to make a difference if we are willing to do the work.
