Relationships are built on understanding from "summary" of Getting Together and Staying Together by William Glasser,M.D.,Carleen Glasser

Understanding is the foundation upon which all successful relationships are built. It is through understanding that we are able to truly connect with others on a deep and meaningful level. When we take the time to understand someone else's thoughts, feelings, and perspectives, we are showing them that we value and respect their individuality. This creates a sense of trust and intimacy that forms the basis of a healthy and lasting relationship. In order to truly understand another person, we must be willing to listen with an open mind and heart. This means setting aside our own preconceived notions and judgments, and instead, approaching the other person with a sense of curiosity and empathy. By actively listening to what they have to say, we are able to gain insight into their inner world and see things from their point of view. Understanding also involves being able to communicate our own thoughts and feelings in a clear and honest manner. When we are able to express ourselves authentically, we give the other person the opportunity to understand where we are coming from and what we need from them. This open and transparent communication fosters a sense of mutual understanding and respect, which is essential for building a strong and resilient relationship. Furthermore, understanding requires us to be patient and tolerant of differences. No two people are exactly alike, and it is inevitable that conflicts and disagreements will arise in any relationship. However, by approaching these differences with an attitude of acceptance and understanding, we are able to navigate through them with grace and compassion. This willingness to compromise and find common ground is what allows relationships to thrive and grow over time.
  1. Relationships that are built on understanding are able to weather any storm that comes their way. By cultivating a deep sense of understanding and empathy towards one another, we are able to create a bond that is unbreakable and enduring. It is through this understanding that we are able to truly connect with others and build relationships that stand the test of time.
