Stop trying to avoid pain and discomfort from "summary" of Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life by Steven Hayes,Spencer Smith
Avoidance is a natural response to pain and discomfort. When we encounter something unpleasant, our first instinct is to get away from it as quickly as possible. This is a normal human reaction, and there is nothing inherently wrong with wanting to avoid pain. In fact, it is a survival mechanism that has helped us as a species to avoid danger and stay alive. However, the problem arises when we become too focused on avoiding pain and discomfort at all costs. When we make it our primary goal to escape unpleasant feelings, we end up limiting ourselves and missing out on valuable experiences. By constantly trying to avoid pain, we actually make it more difficult for ourselves in the long run. This is because the more we try to push away our feelings, the more they seem to intensify and persist. It may seem counterintuitive, but the key to dealing with pain and discomfort is to stop trying to avoid them altogether. Instead of running away from our feelings, we need to learn to sit with them and accept them for what they are. By acknowledging our pain and discomfort without judgment, we can begin to see them as temporary experiences that will eventually pass. When we stop trying to avoid pain, we open ourselves up to a whole new world of possibilities. We no longer need to fear our emotions or run away from them. Instead, we can embrace them as a natural part of being human. This shift in mindset allows us to live more authentically and fully, without constantly being held back by our fears and insecurities.- By accepting pain and discomfort as a normal part of life, we can learn to navigate our emotions more effectively and ultimately find greater peace and contentment. It is only by facing our feelings head-on that we can truly begin to heal and grow as individuals. So, the next time you find yourself trying to avoid pain, remember that it is okay to feel uncomfortable. Embrace your emotions, and you may just find that they are not as scary as you once thought.
