People communicate through both verbal and nonverbal cues from "summary" of Games People Play by Eric Berne, MD

Communication is a complex process that involves more than just words. It is not limited to what is said, but also includes how it is said, the tone of voice, facial expressions, body language, and gestures. These nonverbal cues play a crucial role in conveying emotions, attitudes, and intentions. In fact, studies have shown that nonverbal communication can make up as much as 93% of the total communication process. When people interact, they are constantly sending and receiving messages through both verbal and nonverbal channels. Verbal cues are the words that are spoken, while nonverbal cues are the subtle signals that are transmitted through body language, facial expressions, eye contact, and gestures. These nonverbal cues can often reveal more about a person's true feelings and thoughts than their words. For example, someone may say they are feeling fine, but their body language may indicate otherwise. They may avoid eye contact, slouch in their chair, or fidget nervously. These nonverbal cues can provide important clues about the person's emotional state and help others interpret the true meaning behind their words. In many cases, nonverbal cues can be more powerful and influential than verbal cues. A simple smile, a nod of the head, or a pat on the back can convey warmth, reassurance, and empathy in a way that words alone cannot. Conversely, a scowl, crossed arms, or a raised eyebrow can signal displeasure, disagreement, or disapproval. Understanding both verbal and nonverbal cues is essential for effective communication. By paying attention to the subtle signals that are being sent and received, people can better interpret messages, avoid misunderstandings, and build stronger relationships. It is important to remember that communication is a two-way street, and both verbal and nonverbal cues play a vital role in the exchange of information and emotions.
