Patterns of behavior repeat in games from "summary" of Games People Play by Eric Berne, MD

Patterns of behavior repeat in games. Just as in a deck of cards, there are a limited number of basic games, and the permutations and combinations of these basic patterns are practically infinite. These patterns are not random, but follow a predictable sequence. People may play different roles in different games, but the patterns themselves remain consistent. Each game has its own set of rules, its own script that the players follow. These rules dictate how the players interact with each other, what moves they can make, and what outcomes are possible. Despite the variations in individual games, the underlying patterns of behavior are remarkably similar. In playing these games, people often fall into familiar patterns of behavior without even realizing it. They may unconsciously adopt certain roles or strategies that they have learned over time. These patterns can be so ingrained that they become automatic, almost like second nature. These games are not isolated incidents, but are part of a larger pattern of behavior that people engage in. They may play these games repeatedly, with different people and in different situations, but the underlying patterns remain consistent. This repetition reinforces the behavior and can make it even more difficult to break out of these patterns. Understanding these patterns of behavior is key to changing them. By recognizing the games we play and the roles we adopt, we can begin to break free from these repetitive patterns and make more conscious choices in our interactions with others. Only then can we truly change the way we relate to others and break free from the constraints of these games.
