Familial relationships are often dysfunctional from "summary" of DUBLINERS by James Joyce

Throughout the stories in "Dubliners," we see a recurring theme of familial relationships that are marked by dysfunction. This dysfunction is displayed in various ways, from strained communication to unspoken resentments and unresolved conflicts. In the story "Eveline," we witness the protagonist's complex relationship with her father, which is characterized by a sense of duty and obligation. Eveline feels trapped in her role as caretaker for her father, unable to break free and pursue her own happiness. This sense of duty ultimately leads to a feeling of suffocation and despair. Similarly, in "A Little Cloud," we see the strained relationship between Little Chandler and his wife. Little Chandler is envious of his friend Gallaher's success and freedom, leading to feelings of inadequacy and resentment towards his wife and child. This jealousy and dissatisfaction ultimately drive a wedge between him and his family, highlighting the dysfunction in their relationship. In "The Dead," the dysfunction within the Conroy family is revealed through the character of Gabriel. Gabriel's relationships with his wife and aunts are marked by a lack of understanding and emotional distance. His inability to connect with his loved ones on a deeper level reflects the overall dysfunction within the family unit.
  1. Joyce portrays familial relationships in "Dubliners" as fraught with tension and discord. The characters' struggles with communication, emotional intimacy, and conflicting desires create a sense of unease and discontent within the family dynamic. These dysfunctional relationships serve as a reflection of the larger societal issues and cultural values present in Dublin at the time.
