Dubliners is a collection of fifteen short stories by James Joyce, depicting the individual and collective experiences of various characters in Dublin, Ireland, in the early twentieth century. It explores the themes of spiritual and temporal paralysis, descent into spiritual decadence and the need for rebirth or renewal. Characters develop during the stories, shaped by their environment and increasingly influenced by their Catholic faith. Through the stories, Joyce portrays the Dublin of his day, in its political, social and cultural life, and focuses on the characters' everyday lives, from which the readers can discover an understanding of their hopes, fears, failures and joys.
