Social media feeds dopamine cravings from "summary" of Dopamine Nation by Dr. Anna Lembke
Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat have become integral parts of our daily lives. We check our feeds incessantly, seeking likes, comments, and shares - all in the hope of validation and connection. These platforms provide a constant stream of information and updates, triggering our brain's reward system and flooding it with dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in the brain's reward circuit. It is released in response to pleasurable activities like eating, sex, and social interaction. When we receive notifications or engagement on social media, our brain interprets it as a reward, leading to the release of dopamine. This creates a cycle of seeking more engagement to experience that pleasurable feeling again. The problem arises when this cycle becomes compulsive and begins to interfere with our daily lives. We find ourselves constantly scrolling through our feeds, seeking that next hit of dopamine. We may ignore our responsibilities, lose track of time, and experience negative emotions when we don't receive the desired engagement. This constant seeking behavior can lead to addiction-like symptoms, as our brains become wired to seek out the next social media fix. The hyper-connectivity of social media feeds into our innate desire for social connection and validation. We compare ourselves to others, constantly seeking affirmation and approval from our online peers. This constant comparison can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and depression. We may feel pressure to present a curated version of ourselves online, seeking validation through likes and comments.- Social media feeds our dopamine cravings by providing a constant stream of rewards and stimulation. This can lead to a cycle of compulsive behavior, where we seek out engagement to experience that pleasurable feeling again and again. As we become more reliant on social media for validation and connection, we may neglect our real-life relationships and responsibilities. It is crucial to be mindful of our social media usage and its impact on our mental health and well-being.
