Cognitive dissonance causes inner conflict from "summary" of Dark Psychology by Jonathan Mind

When our beliefs and actions are in conflict with each other, we experience cognitive dissonance. This state of discomfort arises from holding two contradictory ideas simultaneously. For example, if a person believes stealing is wrong but steals something, cognitive dissonance occurs. This inner conflict can cause feelings of guilt, anxiety, and stress as the mind struggles to reconcile the opposing thoughts. Cognitive dissonance can lead individuals to rationalize their behavior in order to reduce the tension. They may convince themselves that stealing was justified in their specific situation, diminishing the dissonance. This rationalization allows them to maintain a positive self-image despite acting against their beliefs. However, this process can have negative consequences by desensitizing individuals to unethical behavior. In the context of dark psychology, cognitive dissonance can be exploited to manipulate and control others. By creating conflicting beliefs in a person's mind, a manipulator can induce inner turmoil and confusion. This disorientation makes the individual more susceptible to suggestion and influence. Manipulators can then offer a solution or explanation that alleviates the cognitive dissonance, solidifying their control over the individual. Understanding how cognitive dissonance causes inner conflict is crucial in recognizing and resisting manipulation. By becoming aware of the uncomfortable feelings that arise from conflicting beliefs and actions, individuals can take steps to address the root cause of their distress. This self-awareness empowers individuals to make informed decisions based on their true values and beliefs, rather than being swayed by external influences.
