Shame is that feeling that tells us we are not enough, not worthy of love and belonging. It is the fear of being exposed or judged, of not measuring up to the expectations of others. Shame makes us put up walls, wear masks, and hide our true selves from the world. It holds us back from being vulnerable, from showing our weaknesses and imperfections, from connecting with others on a deeper level. When we feel ashamed, we try to protect ourselves by pretending to be someone we are not. We put on a brave face, act like we have it all together, and avoid showing any signs of weakness. We fear that if we let our guard down, if we allow ourselves to be seen as we truly are, we will be rejected, abandoned, or hurt. So we keep our shame hidden, buried deep within us, never daring to acknowledge its existence. But this avoidance of vulnerability comes at a cost.
