Leaders set the tone for organizational culture from "summary" of Dare to Lead by Brené Brown

Leaders are the ones who have the power to shape the culture of an organization. They are the ones who set the tone for how things are done, how people interact, and what is valued within the company. Their actions, behaviors, and decisions have a direct impact on the overall culture of the organization. If a leader is disrespectful, rude, or dismissive, then that behavior is likely to be mirrored by others in the organization. On the other hand, if a leader is kind, empathetic, and transparent, then those qualities are more likely to be reflected in the culture of the organization. It is important for leaders to be intentional about the culture they are creating within their organization. They need to think about what values they want to promote, what behaviors they want to encourage, and what kind of environment they want to foster. This requires self-awareness, vulnerability, and a willingness to engage in difficult conversations. Leaders need to be willing to acknowledge their own shortcomings and work on improving themselves in order to create a positive and healthy work environment for their employees. In order to set the tone for organizational culture, leaders need to lead by example. They need to model the kind of behavior they want to see in others. This means being consistent in their actions, being transparent in their communication, and being open to feedback from others. It also means being willing to make tough decisions and stand up for what is right, even when it is difficult or unpopular. Leaders also need to be mindful of the impact of their words and actions on others. They need to be aware of the power dynamics at play within their organization and how their behavior can either reinforce or challenge those dynamics. This requires empathy, humility, and a willingness to listen to and learn from others. It also requires courage, as leaders may need to confront issues of bias, discrimination, or inequality within their organization in order to create a more inclusive and equitable culture.
  1. Leaders have a tremendous responsibility to shape the culture of their organization. They have the power to create a work environment that is either toxic or healthy, divisive or inclusive, stagnant or innovative. By being intentional, self-aware, and empathetic, leaders can set the tone for organizational culture that promotes trust, collaboration, and growth.
