Let go of the need for revenge from "summary" of Dare to Forgive by Edward M. Hallowell

The desire for revenge can be all-consuming. It can consume our thoughts, our emotions, and our actions. When we feel wronged or hurt by someone, it is natural to want to seek revenge. We want them to feel the same pain that they have caused us. We want justice. But holding onto this need for revenge can be damaging to our own well-being. When we hold onto the need for revenge, we are giving the person who wronged us power over our lives. We are allowing them to continue to hurt us long after the initial hurt has occurred. This need for revenge can consume us, leading to bitterness, anger, and resentment. It can prevent us from moving on and finding peace. Letting go of the need for revenge does not mean that we are condoning the other person's actions. It does not mean that we are forgetting what they did to us. It simply means that we are releasing ourselves from the hold that they have over us. We are choosing to no longer let their actions dictate our emotions and our actions. By letting go of the need for revenge, we are taking back control of our own lives. We are choosing to focus on healing and moving forward, rather than holding onto negative emotions. We are allowing ourselves to find peace and closure, rather than continuing to be consumed by thoughts of retaliation. Forgiveness is not easy. It takes time and effort to let go of the need for revenge. But by choosing forgiveness, we are choosing to prioritize our own well-being. We are choosing to free ourselves from the burden of anger and resentment. We are choosing to move forward with our lives in a positive and healthy way.
