Mindfulness training can enhance awareness of anxious thoughts from "summary" of Cognitive Therapy of Anxiety Disorders by David A. Clark,Aaron T. Beck

Mindfulness training involves learning to pay attention to thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations in a non-judgmental way. By cultivating this skill, individuals can increase their awareness of their anxious thoughts, which are often automatic and unconscious. When individuals are more attuned to their anxious thoughts, they are better able to recognize when they are occurring and how they are influencing their emotions and behaviors. Anxiety disorders are characterized by a tendency to overestimate the likelihood of negative events occurring and to underestimate one's ability to cope with them. This cognitive bias can perpetuate anxiety and lead to avoidance behaviors. Mindfulness training can help individuals become more aware of these cognitive distortions and challenge them with a more balanced perspective. By observing their anxious thoughts without judgment, individuals can gain distance from them and see them for what they are - just thoughts, not necessarily reflections of reality. In addition to increasing awareness of anxious thoughts, mindfulness training can also help individuals develop a more compassionate and accepting stance towards themselves. People with anxiety disorders often criticize themselves harshly for experiencing anxiety, which can exacerbate their symptoms. Mindfulness encourages individuals to treat themselves with kindness and understanding, fostering a sense of self-compassion that can buffer against the impact of anxious thoughts. Furthermore, mindfulness training can enhance individuals' ability to tolerate uncertainty and discomfort, which are common triggers for anxiety. By learning to sit with their anxious thoughts and feelings without reacting impulsively, individuals can build resilience and reduce the intensity of their anxiety. This increased tolerance for distress can empower individuals to face their fears gradually and engage in activities they have been avoiding due to anxiety.
  1. Mindfulness training offers a powerful tool for enhancing awareness of anxious thoughts and transforming one's relationship with them. By practicing mindfulness, individuals can develop a more balanced perspective, cultivate self-compassion, and build resilience in the face of uncertainty and discomfort. This shift in mindset can be instrumental in reducing anxiety symptoms and improving overall well-being.
