Selftalk influences emotions and behaviors from "summary" of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy by Adam M. Volungis

Self-talk, or the internal dialogue that we engage in on a daily basis, plays a significant role in shaping our emotions and behaviors. The way we talk to ourselves can either lift us up or bring us down, depending on the nature of our thoughts. When we engage in negative self-talk, such as telling ourselves that we are not good enough or that we will fail, we are setting ourselves up for feelings of sadness, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Conversely, positive self-talk can lead to feelings of confidence, happiness, and motivation. By challenging negative thoughts and replacing them with more realistic and positive ones, we can change the way we feel and behave in a given situation. For example, if we catch ourselves thinking "I can't do this," we can reframe that thought to "I may be struggling now, but I can learn and improve." Our self-talk can also influence our behaviors. If we repeatedly tell ourselves that we are incapable or unworthy, we may avoid taking risks or trying new things out of fear of failure. On the other hand, if we encourage ourselves with affirmations and reminders of past successes, we are more likely to take on challenges with a positive attitude. It is essential to pay attention to our self-talk and to challenge any negative or unhelpful thoughts that arise. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) offers strategies for identifying and changing negative self-talk patterns. By practicing mindfulness and self-awareness, we can learn to recognize when our thoughts are unproductive and to replace them with more positive and constructive ones.
