When we sit down to meditate, we're not trying to make anything happen. We're simply sitting and paying attention to what's going on. We're not trying to make our minds blank or to rid ourselves of thoughts. We're not trying to manipulate our experience in any way. We're not trying to get something. We're simply paying attention to what's happening right now. We're simply being present. As we sit, we notice that thoughts come and go. We notice that our minds are often busy and scattered. We notice that our minds are constantly churning out thoughts, judgments, opinions, and stories. But we don't get caught up in them. We don't get carried away by them. We don't follow them down the rabbit hole. We simply notice them and let them go. Gradually, as we continue to sit and pay attention, our minds begin to quiet down.
