Compassion for oneself is just as important as compassion for others from "summary" of Buddhism for Beginners by Thubten Chodron
In order to cultivate compassion for others, it is essential to first develop a sense of compassion for oneself. This may seem counterintuitive at first, as many of us are taught to put the needs of others before our own. However, in the Buddhist tradition, self-compassion is considered a crucial foundation for extending compassion to others. When we are kind and gentle with ourselves, we are better able to understand our own suffering and thereby empathize with the suffering of others. By recognizing our own vulnerabilities and struggles, we can relate to the experiences of those around us with greater empathy and understanding. Furthermore, practicing self-compassion helps us avoid burnout and exhaustion that can result from constantly giving to others without taking care of ourselves. Just as we would not expect a well to provide water if it is not replenished, we cannot give to others if we are depleted ourselves. In Buddhism, the concept of loving-kindness extends to all beings, including oneself. This means treating ourselves with the same kindness and care that we would offer to a friend in need. By practicing self-compassion, we cultivate a sense of inner peace and well-being that radiates outwards towards others.- Compassion for oneself and compassion for others are interconnected. When we are able to extend kindness and understanding to ourselves, we are better equipped to offer the same to those around us. This reciprocal relationship between self-compassion and compassion for others is a key teaching in Buddhism, emphasizing the importance of caring for oneself in order to care for others.
