You cannot multitask from "summary" of Brain Rules by John Medina
Our brains are not capable of performing multiple tasks simultaneously. This is a common misconception that many of us have, but the truth is that our brains can only focus on one task at a time. When we think we are multitasking, what we are actually doing is rapidly switching our attention between different tasks. This switch may happen so quickly that it gives the illusion of multitasking, but in reality, our brains are just quickly shifting their focus back and forth. This constant switching of attention comes at a cost. Each time we switch tasks, our brains need to reset and refocus, which can be mentally taxing and can lead to a decrease in overall productivity. Research has shown that people who try to multitask actually take longer to complete tasks and are more prone to making mistakes. One of the reasons why our brains struggle with multitasking is because of the way our attention works. Our attention is limited, and when we try to divide it between multiple tasks, we end up spreading ourselves too thin. This can result in a decrease in the quality of our work and can make it difficult for us to fully engage with any one task.- It is more effective to focus on one task at a time. By concentrating all of our attention on one thing, we can work more efficiently, produce higher quality work, and ultimately be more successful. So the next time you find yourself trying to juggle multiple tasks at once, remember that multitasking is a myth and that focusing on one task at a time is the key to productivity and success.
