Control of the mind and senses from "summary" of Bhagavad-Gita As It Is by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

The mind is the controller of the senses. It is said that one who can control the mind can conquer the whole world. The mind is so strong and obstinate that it sometimes overcomes the intelligence, although the mind is supposed to be subservient to the intelligence. For a man in the practical world who has to fight so many opposing elements, it is certainly very difficult to control the mind. The best way to control the mind, as suggested by Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad-Gita, is by engaging it constantly in the transcendental loving service of the Lord. This helps the mind become fixed on the lotus feet of the Lord, and thus the senses are controlled. The mind is fickle and can be compared to the wind. Controlling the mind is not an easy task, but it can be achieved through constant practice and detachment. The mind can be controlled by intelligence when it is engaged in Krishna consciousness. The senses are so strong that they are always anxious to have sense gratification. The senses should be engaged in the service of the Lord, and then there is no chance of their being engaged in sense gratification. The Bhagavad-Gita teaches us how to control the mind and senses through the process of bhakti-yoga, or devotional service. By engaging in devotional service, one can gradually purify the mind and senses, making them fit for serving the Lord. When the mind and senses are engaged in the service of the Lord, they become peaceful and satisfied, and there is no longer any need for sense gratification. This is the secret of controlling the mind and senses - by engaging them in the service of the Lord, one can achieve true peace and happiness.
