Existential guilt arises from our failure to live authentically from "summary" of Being and Time by Martin Heidegger

Existential guilt emerges as a fundamental aspect of our being, stemming from the inauthentic way in which we navigate our existence. When we fail to confront our own individuality and take ownership of our choices, we fall into a state of disconnection from our true selves. This disconnection leads to a sense of guilt that permeates our being, as we recognize the discrepancy between who we are and who we could be if we embraced our authentic selves. Heidegger argues that this sense of guilt is not simply a moral failing, but rather a reflection of our failure to live in accordance with our own possibilities. By conforming to societal expectations and norms, we relinquish our individuality and sacrifice the opportunity to realize our own unique potential. This denial of our authentic selves results in a deep-seated feeling of guilt that lingers beneath the surface of our everyday experiences. In order to overcome this existential guilt, Heidegger suggests that we must confront our own mortality and embrace the temporality of our existence. By acknowledging the finitude of our lives, we are compelled to confront the reality of our choices and the responsibility that comes with them. Through this process of self-reflection and acceptance, we can begin to live more authentically and alleviate the burden of guilt that weighs heavily on our being. Heidegger posits that only by embracing our individuality and taking ownership of our choices can we transcend the inauthenticity that plagues our existence. In doing so, we can free ourselves from the shackles of guilt and live in accordance with our true selves. By recognizing the importance of living authentically, we can begin to navigate our existence in a more meaningful and fulfilling way, unencumbered by the burden of existential guilt.
